Coppell - Doyle was so brave
After the 0-0 draw at Wigan, boss Steve Coppell revealed that Kevin Doyle played shortly after being informed of the death of his cousin in a house fire in Ireland.
Coppell said, "We found out this morning, just before we went into a team meeting. I thought 'well I know his family haven't phoned him because they wanted to leave it until after the game'.
"I felt it was the right thing to do to tell him. He then phoned his family and after talking with them he made the decision.
"I chatted with Kevin - he was obviously upset, that goes without saying. But in a way I think playing the game took his mind off it. I asked him how he felt, and having spoken to his family, I think he wanted to play.
"Perhaps if he hadn't played, he would just have been sitting and thinking about things. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, there isn't a right thing to do in this sitaution.
"He was terrific given the circumstances, I can only imagine what he might have been thinking, certainly before the game. But with the focus of what we are trying to do, that probably took his mind off it. Now he can think about it, find out what happened and mourn with his family."
