Minute-by-minute
1:40pm - The players are out on the pitch and taking a look at what seems to be a very nice surface. It is absolutely red hot.

1:45pm - A nice boost to see kit man Ron Grant back with the squad today after a good few months out with a hip problem.

2pm - Reading expected to make three changes to today's team, with Marek Matejovsky, John Oster and Graeme Murty all come in. Glen Little misses out with an injury.

2:05pm - With 55 minutes to go, time seems to be passing at an incredibly slow rate. There are plenty of Royals fans behind the goal already, with dozens of huge inflatables. There are footballs, kangaroos, beach balls and all manner of private parts!

2:10pm - Our keepers come out to warm up and there's a big chorus of USA, USA. Adam Federici has a very closely-shaved haircut for the summer.

2:15pm - Teams confirmed. Reading make three changes; Murty, Matejovsky and Oster in for Rosenior, Bikey and Doyle. Jimmy Kebe takes a place on the bench ahead of Shane Long.

2:20pm - Derby will go 3-5-2 today, with Eddie Lewis and Hossam Ghaly as the two widemen. Youngsters Miles Addison and Paris Simmons are both on the bench. They both featured for County's reserves against us earlier in the season as we won 5-0 with four goals earlier in the season.

2:25pm - Large cheers for every one of our players as their names are read out over the PA. Number 13 is in good voice.

2:27pm - Very, very loud ovation for our players as they come out to warm up, followed by a chorus of 'we are staying up.' The fans' mood is positive. It's so hot James Harper's warming up in a sleeveless vest.

2:30pm - News from Fratton Park as Pompey name a strong team including Defoe, Kanu, Kranjcar, Utaka, Distin and ex-Royal Jamie Ashdown. Sol Campbell is injured. At St Andrews, Blackburn include Santa Cruz, Bentley and so on.

2:35pm - The inflatables are going crazy in the away end. There are crabs, dinghys, ladybirds, cars, union jacks, a Spongebob Squarepants and all kinds! The away end is nearly full and that will be a real boost for the players as they warm up.

2:40pm - The PA here is loud, but our fans are doing everything they can to be even louder. It's party time in there. Let's hope the outcome matches the mood.

2:45pm - Derby give their player of the season award to their fans. Chairman John Madejski has just appeared pitchside to applaud our travelling support.

2:54pm - The players are out and shaking hands. Welcome to two of the most uncomfortable hours of your life!

2:59pm - The final huddle of the season is taking place out in the middle. We have managed a mini-huddle in the press seats.

2 mins - Nothing to report so far. A frantic pace has been set, which in this heat could prove telling.

4 mins - Marek Matejovsky wins it in midfield and plays an early ball through to Lita. He's onside and in on goal. Carroll comes racing out and although Lita gets the first touch the Derby stopper saves with an outstretched leg.

5 mins - Oster gets it on the right and crosses into the box, where Lita cranes his neck to power a goal towards the right post. Carroll can just watch it bobble wide. Reading have started well though.

7 mins - Murty collects it from Oster on the right. He slides the ball through to Matejovsky who races into the box. He lashes a low shot across the face but wide of the left upright.

14 mins - GOAL! Oster plays it forward. Kitson lays it off to Harper, who curls a sublime left footed effort into the top left corner! 1-0!

15 mins - The Royals fans have just started a 'Pompey, play up! Play up Pompey chant'. As that kicks in Shorey swings in a cross to the near post and Lita almost bundles it home.

16 mins - Kitson centres it with his left foot to Lita, who is again in space. He takes too long though and a Rams defender gets back to dispossess him.

21 mins - Reading are still dominating. Can all the games just end now?

24 mins - Matejovsky ghosts through and is cynically dragged back on the edge of the box. He doesn't go down though and is eventually dispossessed.

28 mins - Emanuel Villa is looking to run onto a dinked ball over the top, but Duberry muscles him out of it.

29 mins - Shrey launches a long free kick into the box and Carroll and Duberry challenge for it. Carroll gets it cleanly but lands awkwardly and is now receiving treatment. He's ok though.

32 mins - Kitson is looking to flick it on but he can't get a touch. It bounces into the box and Lita is in here. He nips in to nod it ahead of Carroll's punch and is clattered. That should possibly have been a penalty, but a goal kick is signalled.

35 mins - Birmingham have scored which means a win is imperative for Reading. Fulham still goalless.

39 mins - David Jones has time and space to pull the trigger from 25 yards out and he hits it well. Hahnemann is down low to his left to push it round the post. The corner is cleared.

42 mins - Hunt chests it in front of him and delays the pass perfectly to slide it into an onside Lita. It's another race between Lita and Carroll and the Rams stopper wins this one, smothering on the slide.

HALF TIME - As it stands Reading are safe. But a goal here for Derby, or a goal for Fulham at Fratton Park would completely change that. It's predictably on a knife edge.

Double Derby substitution. Feilhaber and Edworthy are on for Sterjovski and Savage.

50 mins - A hopeful floated cross to the far post finds Feilhaber, who nods a looping effort just over the crossbar.

52 mins - Derby have started the half better to be honest. Birmingham have conceded to Blackburn. It's 1-1 at St Andrew's.

59 mins - GOAL! Kitson! Shorey's long range effort is half saved by Carroll. Lita chases it down and cuts it into the middle from the byline. Kitson slides in and scores!

62 mins - Derby substitution. Simmonds on for Villa.

64 mins - Miller has the ball in the back of the net, but the whistle hs gone for a foul on Duberry.

65 mins - Reading substitution. Kitson is off for Kevin Doyle. Kitson has been struggling since scoring.

68 mins - GOAL! Doyle races down the right. He's in the box. He cuts it into the middle but it's blocked back to him. From the ground he hooks the ball inside the left upright. 3-0. It's surely all in Pompey's hands now.

76 mins - Doyle does well to turn his man and scamper to the edge of box. He is tripped but it rauns into Harper's path. He's bearing down on goal from the right but Carroll saves.

77 mins - Fulham have scored. All this could be in vain. This is cruel.

82 mins - Reading substitution. Kalifa Cisse is on for Matejovsky.

84 mins - This game has become irrelevant. Reading have done everything they can but without a late Portsmouth equaliser, the Royals are relegated.

85 mins - Reading substitution. Bikey is on for Harper.

90 mins - Oster appeals for a penalty but nothing is given.

90(+1) mins - GOAL! Doyle crosses and Leroy Lita nods it home from yards out. A good headed finish. It makes no difference.

FULL TIME - A 4-0 win. But it's not going to be enough. The Reading players go to the crowd and salute an absolutely outstanding away following for their amazing support.

That's it. It's full time at Fratton Park and Portsmouth have been beaten. Reading are relegated.

A Derby fan has just said she is 'sorry'. I think it will be widely thought of as a shame that Reading will be missing from next season's Premier League.

The away support has been outstanding all season but now the Derby fans are applauding the loyal Royals, who now sing 'Reading Til I Die'.

Steve Coppell is waving to the crowd now. He is being given a fantastic reception.
