Coppell: Why I stayed
Steve Coppell has given his first video interview since deciding that he will stay at Reading.
Coppell is now back in the country after a post-season trip abroad, and he has spoken to the Club's official online TV station Reading World at length.
The first part of the interview is online now, and he gives the reasons behind his decision to remain at the helm.
He explained to us, "First of all, it must have been a little confusing for the supporters because they would have seen that I signed a two-year deal last summer. Yes it was a two-year contract, but only if we stayed in the Premiership. There was a cut-off following relegation.
"When I first negotiatied that deal, I just felt if we got relegated it would be a natural break for everybody. I assumed the Club would not want me, and to be honest I thought my time would be up, it would be best if someone else came in and took over.
"Obviously we did get relegated, and then I really just felt a hole. I didn't want to be remembered as the man who got us relegated, I didn't want that legacy.
"There was a reaction from the supporters, the Chairman and everyone in the Club saying 'please stay.'
"Since I've been here I've talked many times about the most important thing for me as a manager. I don't have wild ambition to manage Man Utd or England, I want to be at a Club where I'm wanted, and I am!
"We had to renogotiate a deal, and that was done fairly quickly once I'd met with the Chairman, he said he wanted me to stay and I said I wanted to stay.
"Now we're back and in the process of planning for next year. I am delighted to be here, I am very privileged to manage this club and I will keep that mentality."
The first part of this interview is online now, and you can see our free preview clip. Steve also talks about the role the fans played in his decision to stay, as well as his relationship with John Madejski and more besides.
