Woodley maintains goal run
Team Weston 0-4 Reading
Frank Rodriguez's Reading travelled to the West Country for the second week running after last week's game vs Plymouth.
The trip was disrupted with the M4 closure causing the team to arrive only 15 minutes before normal kick off.
The kick off was rescheduled but Reading turned this disruption into a fine team performance against a team who had already recorded home draws against second and third placed Bournemouth and Plymouth respectively.
It was a positive start from Reading with Rachel Fell and Kayleigh Hines going close in the early minutes of the match. Hines also saw a header from a corner somehow pushed on to the crossbar by the keeper and Jenny Webb, who enjoyed a fine game, just unable to force the ball home when following up.
They finally took the lead all the pressure warranted when Hines found Fell, whose driven shot was pushed out by the keeper and Webb crashed the ball home from two yards out with her left foot.
Jo Chubb had a shot well blocked on the line by a combination of goalkeeper and defender, before Reading finally added to their lead on 30 minutes.
Hines, who was in dominant form in centre midfield, played the ball out wide to Webb, who clipped in a left footed cross which saw Laura Woodley rise majestically and flick the ball over the advancing keeper to keep her goal a league game record for the season.
The remainder of the half saw Reading continue to dominate possession with Tash Caswell becoming more and more influential, shooting wide when well placed. Hines forced another save from the keeper and Webb almost scored when the keeper let the ball slip through her fingers.
Team Weston started the second half brightly, but Reading's defence of Wiggins, Chambers, Osborne-Ricketts and Pearmine in front of keeper Wilcox, restricted them to long range speculative shots. After 57 minutes a brilliant turn by Caswell forced the Team Weston defender to bring her down, with the referee instantly pointing for a penalty. Caswell had the ball placed on the spot and was beginning her run up when the referee changed his decision to a free-kick outside of the box.
The third goal arrived on 62 minutes when Webb held the ball up before laying a pass into Pearmine's path and her cross was calmly dispatched by Woodley. Ricketts almost added her a fourth from a Pearmine corner but blasted wide.
Reading then made a triple substitution with New, Smith and May coming on for Wiggins, Fell and Webb. The fourth came when New's throw saw a clever turn and cross by Caswell finished expertly by May with her left foot. Smith almost added a fifth but her shot from the edge of the box found the side netting.
The final whistle saw a 4-0 win to maintain the promising start to the season the young side has made. After having played everybody in the league now, Reading need to continue to produce this performance each game for the rest of the season. Their next game is in two weeks, being the return against Team Weston, before another run of three tough away games before the Christmas break.
Manager Frank Rodriugez commented after the game, "An excellent team performance by the whole squad considering the travel disruption. The most pleasing aspect was that the hard work coach Allan Manners has done over the last couple of weeks in training on finishing and defending saw us today convert more of our chances and just as importantly keep our second clean sheet of the season."
Carterton 0-2 Reading reserves
Reading Reserves played a well-organised and spirited Carterton side and it took a patient performance to break down the home side and take home another three points.
Reading started the game somewhat disjointed. With Measham, Todd and Panting stuck in motorway traffic the side was reshuffled just before kick-off. Gemmell showed a safe pair of hands again and good kicking, with Wilcox further impressing for the first team and Poole away. Laura Derlacki and Emily Smith had also earned themselves a call up to the first team but due to illness Derlacki did not play.
The game started reasonably slowly with only two scrappy efforts from Carterton and good link up play by the Royals forwards and midfielders seeing shots go wide within the first 20 minutes.
23 minutes should have seen the away side take the lead though when Ryan's corner found Mitchell inside the 6 yard box but she could only steer the ball wide.
The home side were doing well and made it very hard for Reading to break them down, getting players behind the ball quickly and dropping deep not allowing players through and in behind. Reading again could have taken the lead though.
After Strange saw her shot well saved and Carterton defended consecutive corners well, one dropped in to the area and efforts from Williams, Mitchell and Dickinson were all blocked and cleared.
Half time came with two changes. Panting came on to replace Strange and Todd replaced Farley who had made her comeback from injury.
This gave Reading a little more in a second period that again saw Reading play in the oppositions half for the full 45 minutes. Welch seemed to find her spark in the second half and on 60 minutes linked well with Williams but Williams could not find the finishing touch.
3 minutes later Trimmer was replaced by Measham and 74 minutes saw Welch fire in a free kick that was parried and Williams could only head in to the keepers arms.
With only 15 minutes left Reading made a tactical change rotating their front 3 and 2 minutes later it nearly paid off. Welch anticipated the defender missing a header and could not finish when through on goal.
It felt like a goal would never come but on 78 minutes Welch again reacted quickest to a loose ball and despite the efforts of Carterton's strong centre back she took a touch and finished well inside the far post.
Welch should have made it 2 after turning well in the area following a Dickinson cross but could only hit the post and put the rebound wide. Beales managed to grab the second and all three points on 82 minutes.
Lou Smith surged up the left hand side and drilled in a low cross which Beales finished well on the turn. A patient performance and a good 3 points from a difficult game showing great team spirit with the celebrations after the first goal.
